Subject: crackling sound

Have lived aboard my TM36 for many years in north east and never experienced this before... brought the boat doen to Florida for the winter and ever since I hit warm water I hear this crackling sound down below while at anchor or dock. Have never heard this before.. plan on diving the bottom to check zincs etc but when i checked btm 3 months ago was pretty clean.. no barnicles.. any suggestions?

Joe, we have had the same experience. Some anchorages are louder than others. Are you in Florida now? If so, where? We are wintering (without Sandpiper) on the Florida's Treasure coast.

Thanks for the responses, shrimp? never thought of that before. was really worried something was wrong with the hull or some kind of electrolysis issue. Have never really herd it on other boats in the caribbean.. but if thats all.. Id rather it be that! Gene, Im in Ft lauderdale right now. was planning to hit the N. Bahamas for couple weeks before heading back north but very behind on planned work so we'll see what happens.. where in Fl. are u guys?

The shrimp we have in San Francisco bay are diminutive creatures, soft bodied, ghostly grey, and quiet as mice—this later probably because they have been fished nearly to oblivion.

But I have had a similar experience with engine noise.

I was at anchorage on the back side of Angel Island and from the cabin heard very clearly the metallic whir of an engine and propeller. I went on deck. It was a pitch black night and from the cockpit I could neither hear the noise nor see any navigation lights indicating a passing vessel in the main channel.

I imagined it to be a submarine, but Navy activity here is now rare, so I have no idea what it really was.
