"Text Book" says the lowers should be set from 10-15% of the breaking strength of the wire and the uppers should be about 20%. See Brion Toss's Riggers Apprentice for more help there. Loos makes a nice gauge but twanging with a tool is a time-honored method. The uppers should be 1/3 chord higher in pitch.

I'd be curious if anyone has any different information for wooden masts.
