Subject: 3M Goop--a hint

We used 3M 5200 exclusively for deck to hull joints and to fasten the toe rail during our deck replacement job in 2003.

What I did not know then was that 5200 has no UV resistence. So, over the last 3 years, the seams on the toe rail that can be seen by the sun have chalked and split, especially on the outboard side.

Sadly, I only made this discovery recently and AFTER I had cut out and replaced the 5200 with 5200 over last winter. So I've started the cycle again.

One fellow boat owner suggested I paint the seam white to keep it from chalking. Good idea. Less tedious than the cut and replace method.

However, if replaced again, I will use 3M 4200, which has the right strength and is UV resistent.

A word to the wise... :)
