Subject: Bronze cleaning

Hello,
My boat has been sitting outside for years on the Oregon coast. As a result, the bronze fittings have corroded terribly. I've tried several household brass/bronze cleaners but none of them seem top get deep enough.

Is there an industrial way to clean them? I can sand the corrosion off, but it damages the effecet of the bronze, leaving it with a sanded look.

ANy help would be appreciated.

Also, I love this site and the information I have gotten from it. I'm in the middle of a total deck/cabin/cockpit rebuild and have many helpful articles. I hope this site can stay up indefinatly.

I would just leave it alone. If it is a true bronze, it won't corrode as the green patina is a protective coating. If you do decide to polish, you will be going down a high maintenance road as it will tarnish soon after you polish. I had a CD Typhoon and removed all of the bronze hardware and sanded the rough castings smooth starting with 220 grit and worked my way up to 600 grit, and then polished using a wheel. After I installed the hardware I used Brasso to polish. It looked great, but one drop of salt water and it would tarnish before my eyes. Unless you like polishing for the Zen of it, keep it green :)
