Subject: Wind generators

I'm looking for information on mounting a wind generator on Sea Song (155). I was planning on a mizzen mount setup but have found information that indicates a stability problem in high winds. Propeller diameter is 46 inches (Air X 400 marine generator). Has anyone considered any other positions to mount.

I saw a picture where the generator was mounted on a frame that was extended off the back of the boat. I have never seen anything like it before. Did not look bad!! It also served to store his dingy.

I'm having a hard time picturing an aft mounted wind generator that won't interfer with the mizzen. We're having a hard time mounting the wind vane for our self-steering much less a wind generator. Do you have any pictures?

Cheers,
John

I can not find the site where I saw the boat. But, if you go to allinflatables.com and look at their boat davits for sailboats. This one was a little taller and extended out farther. It had a tube platform attached to the top of the davit. All electronics and wind generator were mounted on the platform. It was the first one I have ever seen like it.

Hi, Doug....

I would definitely go with a mizzen mounted windgen. I would also make sure the windgen base was a wide "U" channel hugging the mizzenmast with 3 throughbolts securing it and that it has a strut at the forward end, supporting it lower on the mizzen.

I hope that makes sense.

Bill

I will look for the pictrue and send it to you if I find it. It looked real interesting. I am thinking of mounting my electronics on the back.

If you look at Island mag june issue page 78. You will see a simular picture of what I saw.

My Mariner has dual main mast backstays that are split at the masthead. I had a huge wind generator that was mounted on the mizzen with a U-shaped bracket like Bill mentioned, but it was also supported by a tube/bar running between each of the dual backstays and two additional mounting bars running between the backstay tube/bar and the U-shaped mounting bracket. Confusing? Perhaps I need to look for a picture. It was very stable, but I always felt like I was back in the Marine Corps in a helo LZ when that thing was running! I took it down and just use it from the taff rail when under way as a water driven generator.
