Subject: The Tayana Mariner 36 sales info says otherwise...
In reply to: Randall 's message, "Mr. Oberly" on - Monday - 06/19/06 - 11:36am

The Sale info posted on this site gives Bill Garden credit for the design of the Tayana Mariner 36. The Mariner 36, Tayana Mariner 36, and the Mariner 40 seem almost identical in design.

Bill, can you throw any light on this discussion? I noticed the sales brochure you posted earlier says Oberley was building S&S designs. The interior pictures look very familiar to the later Mariners.

........the only boat Bill Garden claims he had anything to do with (not that he designed it for FEY by any means)was the M35. I had spoken to him about 10 years ago. Not wanting to go into details and raise any issues, lets just say that all the other models were drawn at the FEY boards by Clair and his staff. That includes the various wooden M31 prototypes.
As you can see, almost all of the interiors (including the SS 40's) have distinct similarities. Not an uncommon practice. The whole history on the boats (including that of the TM36) is in the FEY pages. We have very detailed letters from the real players in there.

Best regards to all,
Bill Kranidis

Thanks for all your hard work Bill! So I guess the next question is, are the M40 plans available anywhere?

What you see on the site is what we have. Rion Oberly was kind enough to give all Mariner related documents he had in his possession. I'm afraid unless some original owner who happened to have the plans in his hands when he took delivery of the boat comes forward and offers them, we'll never get them. And that goes for ANY original Mariner owner.....31,32,35,36,40.

they are just extended versions of each other. The only difference is the TM36. Though from the same mold of the M36, built by Tayana, it had the interiors redrawn and who knows what else. Do they resemble Garden designs ? Absolutely. Did Garden have anything to do with them ? Nope.

We can thank Bill Hardin for the infusion of Garden designs in the Far East boatbuilding (look at Yankee Clippers, Formosas, CT41's, etc etc.).

Best,
Bill
