Subject: Converting a Ketch rig to a Sloop rig w/same size main mast

I would like to convert my Mariner 31 Ketch to a Sloop rig using the original main mast and putting a longer boom for the new mainsail. Has anyone successfully done this?? I know that some have been converted to Cutter rigs but I want to convert mine to a sloop rig in the same position. Any information/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

Certainly my Mariner sails just fine with the mizzen down if there's enough wind, and in upwind situations, the mizzen can add more weather helm than it's worth, so your idea is interesting. More than one old duffer has said, "nice boat, but get rid of that little mast--it's just drag."

How long would you like the boom to be?

I think you biggest challange will be finding a permanent place for the backstay chainplate. Maybe you could use the aftermost mizzen chainplate location, but is the angle right?

Or you could move to double running backstays, but the balance between running backs (loose by devinition) and fairly tightened-down forestay and lowers might not please the mast. I'd be concerned that the box mast construction might not be up for such variances in load. Don't know--no experience here.

If the running backs idea appeals, how about a gaff rig?
