Subject: Mariner 40 sail plan

Does anyone know where to get a sail plan of the Mariner 40. I am working on the sails and rigging and a sail plan and/or rigging would really help.

Thanks,
Ben

Ben,

go to the website and click the "M40" tab. Under "Specifications" you'll find all you need.

...and...why aren't you a MOA member yet ??? You don't want a photo of your boat posted upside down, do you ???

Submit info asap :-)

Best,
Bill Kranidis

[> [> Looking for a sailplan with CE etc. -- Ben McKinley-Potter, - Sunday - 10/ 9/11 - 6:55pm

I have seen the one there but if you look closely it is not a m40 in the picture, and it also doesn't have the CE of the sails or the combined CE marked on it. I am going to be working on the rigging in the near future and wanted as detailed plans as possible as there are some modifications to our rig done by a previous owner and I would like to see how she was meant to be originally and I was thinking of adding a couple of sails at some point.

I haven't joint or sent pictures as we are in the process of restoring her. Don't worry, before and after pictures are on their way once she is ship shape again.

Ben,

.....yes, the photo is of a M32 but the measurements are of a M40. When you say your boat's rigging was modified what do you mean? Were the masts moved fore or aft? Shortened or made taller? Was the bowsprit shortened or extended? Booms still same?

Interested to find out what you're up to :-)

Best,
Bill

[> [> [> [> Going trough the rigging -- Ben McKinley-Potter, - Monday - 11/ 7/11 - 1:48pm

I am working on getting her rig in shape and contemplating a few changes (I was thinking of possible changing to a gaff rig but that doesn't seem terribly wise after closer inspection)like switching from internal to external chainplates (having some leaks etc). Some of her rigging was redone in a less that professional manner and I wanted to see what the original rig was like and original sail plan we have the original mainsail by the mizzen was replaced with a less that perfect fit used sail. Just trying to find out how things were designed to be.
Part of the complicating issue is that Grace is not a standard layout(she was built for the perkins 4.236 85hp engine)and so some of the dimensions are a bit different from the normal mariners. I'll be sending information and pictures (before and after) once we get her in a little better shape.
Thanks,
Ben

[> sail dimensions -- Sean, - Friday - 07/20/12 - 12:03pm

So are the dimensions on the specs page the actual dimensions of the sails or would you need something slightly smaller to fit the rig? Working on getting my rig back up as well and need to buy used sails.

Sean,

I-J-P etc. dimensions, are actual sail dimensions gathered through a painstakingly process of owner submissions and sailmaker records. Of course you could go a little shorter (by an inch or two) if you find a great deal on a used set.

[> [> [> dolphin striker -- Gary Baoukas, - Sunday - 11/11/12 - 2:31pm

Wonder if anyone could give me the length of the Dolphin Striker on the Mariner 40. Long story involving storms at sea, and all that but it disappeared in a night at anchor with rough weather and I need to make a new one.
Also.. in that vein of thought... has anyone come up with a sensible anchor technique that doesn't drag the anchor rode across the Bobstay? Between chafe on the rode and pressure on the stay in the area of the striker ( a bad place to be )... anchoring is aggravating. All I've come up with is a bridled rode between the fore hawer just off the bow and a line to the the rear to keep her sideways to the rode and eliminate a swing across the bobstay.

I know some folks like to do everything themselves, but, frankly, it would be money well spent to have a professional sailmaker measure the actual rig and make recommendations, rather than depending on specs that may or may not directly relate to what you've got.
We had new masts made for Ta' Ata Ori several years ago (aluminum) and the mast maker worked hand-in-hand with the sailmaker. The result: perfect fit.
Fair winds.
