I can only speak to what I have done on my boat, Mariner 40, but it was done with the ok from the rigger, so I assume it was not too unusual. I replaced the back stay with the mast on, just using one halyard as a temporary backstay. Used the winch to tension the halyard quite a bit to take out any stretch. Going up the mast it seemed as solid with the halyard as it did with the backstay. I did tie the end of the halyard rather than use the snapshackle where it attached in the cockpit, but other than that nothing special.

Not a problem, replaced the forestay and added Profurl 320 four years ago, and pulled the forestay and furler a couple of weeks ago. Used the jib halyard, cranked it tight.
Also replaced spreader plates this summer. And all standing rigging as well.
