Subject: What prop should I be running?

I have an M31 with a 4-108 perkins.

What prop should I be running. I have a two blade.
Should I replace with three blad 16x14 or 17x12?
any advice would be wonderful.

I need to replace the prop due to corrosion.

About one month ago I saw an M31/32 at a scrap yard here in the LA Harbor.

She was tied to a dock and looked to be in good shape. Masts were straight, no list, good paint, etc.

Two weeks ago she was pulled up on the ground by the wrecking crain and destroyed.
She appeared to be a wooden hull. I regret not motoring over and getting some information from the wrecking crew before they did their terrible work.

Does anyone know which hull she might have been or anything at all on the vessel. A shame....everytime I pass the wrecking yard I can't help but feel sad.

There was a note from a fellow MOA member about that time, that "Ravensong" was about to be destroyed. I posted some info about it below (11/7/05)

Sad , Just sad. I find it strange that Ravensong found her way from Lynns down to LA Harbor, back in the water, back out - then destroyed. Boats sink at the slip more often then when in use as the owner is ususally not present.
I live here in Ventura and wish I had noted Ravensongs situation. I can't imagine what could of been the issue beyond submersion due to some small failure, probably created a fair salvage bill ,hence total by insurance.
who know's maybe some horrible rot in the hull let go.
anyhow I think perhaps we lost two sisters as I can't imagine that was ravensong in LA harbor. Finally, last month one evening, I put my 1968 Far East Yachts H28 on the rocks off ventura california. she is terribly hurt. numerous broken frames and some damaged planks, rudder is gone. She will be going for a salvage price. She has a volvo penta MD7b that was pickled and will run, I know. I am torn but cannot keep her for a project. she is African Mahogany over Yacal frames, simply beautiful. If you can work wood you can be sailing next summer. Otherwisw I fear a third sister will be heading for the boneyard. My heart is broken. Contace me for info. she sits in ventura, the dear girl stayed above line long enough to get her in, with harbor patrols help of course.

Thanks you for your interest. Freyja is Hull#90 out of the Far East Yard Built in 1967. She is a wonderful example of Far East workmanship. They most certainly had worked out the bugs. I have had her for a couple of years but was living long distance from her and she was a bit rough when I got her. She has been under cover however, in a slip, monthly bottom cleaning. she has been in Salt water her whole life. She has a volvo penta MD7b which I have just rebuilt the transmission. she was running like a top.
I had 90% Cabin sanded in prep for epoxy and then varnish.
As I said I had been living far from her so she was needing attention to the deffered maintainence. She was safe and strong and good for easy sails but also still headed out in full sail strong while the plastic snot boats came running in under reef, tail tucked. Happened all the time. smile.
Unfortunately 30 minutes on the jetty one night last month took its toll. She has two locations both starboard below waterline where rock penetrated. Remember she is double planked. She sustained substaintial trauma on starboard side. If those two locations where to be tended to she will float again. problem being there are numerous cracked and broken frames. she also lost her rudder, I have searched the break and the beaches but it is gone.
frames are all accessible and this is absolutely a worthwhile project. It would require time more then anything else.
Her decks are fiberglass over marine ply and there were some soft spots before she bounced around. The trauma only excentuated the need to fix those areas. Spars are Spruce or Fir and would be prudent to take down and wood them.
Unfortunately she needs alot now. The ventura boatyard told me they'll make her new for approx $160,000.- hehe.
They would take apart and put back together.
They say if I try and fix myself figure five years, but thats total restore.
ANother shipwright I have spoken with tells me wooden boats were made to be fixed and with focus and determination she can be sailing again soon. I have some recent pics of her and I will have some current pics as soon as I get a new camera as mine got wet along with everything. That's another story. Thanks again for the interest.
The insurance will be settling any day and I will know what she can be bought back for then. I will update when I know.

It looks it is gonna be about $1000.00 to buy her back.

$160,000 replacement value for $1000.
They sure don't like wood boats.

I am guessing the Volvo md7b and reverse gear is worth that $1000.00

The shaft/taper measurement for my prop is 1 1/16 on the inside edge and 15/16 on the outside edge. I'm guessing this is very standard.

The prop is left handed.
