Subject: prop ?

M32' Have 4-107 with V/drive 1:1 .. What props are you guy's running ? 12x6 ,3 blade ? how does it perform?.Been informed i need to change my trans to 1.91:1 or 2:1 even a 2.2:1 and a 15" 4 blade prop to get above 3.5 knots to around 6 in a heavy sea way? So may be looking for 1.91 2:1 or 2.2:1 trans if you know of one.

I have a 4108 with a 1:1 and a 12x6. In October I motored north along the coast about 20 miles to a favorite anchorage and happened to pick a day for this jaunt when I had headwinds of 25 - 30 knots and short but very steep and breaking seas (was over the Golden Gate bar, tide contra wind). I could easily get up to 4 knots over the water and occasionaly hit 5 knots in those conditions, but given the steepness of the seas, actually had to back off throttle every few wave sets to keep Murre from burrying her nose. She was pounding badly. I had standing water on the deck most of the day and pleny of it down my front.

Point being the 12 x 6 was plenty of power and my lack of speed was defined by the sea conditions, not the prop.

Also consider the injury to sailing performance a 15" and/or 4 blade prop will inflict. Is it worth it? If I could afford it, I'd install a folding 3 blade.

In rough conditions, everyone slows down. I doubt the wisdom of planning your prop/tranny configuration around extreme conditions.

My two cents...

Randall thanks i have never had this boat in the water so unshore of how it performs under power ? Going to be doing a refit over the summer next year as part of that pulling the engine. The boat has not seen water in some 15 year .My info came from the folding prop company. My plan was ONLY a engine rebiuld check the trans new shaft seal etc and a nice new prop (folding ) Must say the spec's from the prop outfit did shock me ie: no more than 3.5 knots in a bad sea, engine temp with a 12x6 prop and so on ! So hence my posting ..Nice to know a 12x6 3 blade folding prop will do just fine ..I feel some what at ease now thank you .Didn't really plan to spend some $2.000 more on a trans! .
must say you guy's and this great site are a god send .Bill has been a great help also.

Hold on, Sterling. Just so we're clear, my post above refers to my current prop, which is 12x6 but is NOT a folding prop. I don't know anything about folding prop performance, so don't take my remarks as a green light for a 12x6 folder.

Still, I'd get a second opinion. Sounds like your prop guys are selling you a load of whoowe.

Randall What is you REV range under load with your 12x6 prop?

But I rarely need that much. Under normal conditions, I motor at about 1/2 to 2/3rds thottle.

My RPM guage is very old and (honelsty) hasn't worked in about a year ... so these numbers are from memory...

Hi Randall thanks for that.. going to replace all engine guages in the refit the old stuff looks just fine (RPM,Oil,Temp,Amp,) all on one very nice panel in the cookpit ..Your welcome to it when removed if you like. Will ship it to you in the spring when i return from the BVI's ..Changing the hole thing around fitting a teak hatch over the cockpit well to make the aft deck flush . A locker for my liferaft did this to my last boat worked very nicely . With the flush full aft deck of the M32 will be extra sharp I think.

Thanks Sterling, but I'm going to replace mine w/new after a bit as well. No need to send. The job is low, low on the list as I've found that the water temp guage (which works) is the only one I need regularly.
