Subject: LOA vs. LOD measurements of "M40" Ketch

I am in the process of buying a "Mariner 40". Has been surveyed. I understand there is (some) controversy surrounding the actual measurement of the M40. Specs. in this website indicate M40 has a LOD of 40.4ft. Surveys of the boat I'm looking at incicate LOA of 40.4. I've read or heard that there has been cases of owners marketing Mariner Ketch's as a M40 when they were not actually an "M40". Anyone "out there" want to comment on this matter or go outside and give me their ACTUAL measurement of their Mariner 40?

The first thing would be to call your surveyor and ask him (or her) what they meant by LOA. The proper use of LOA includes bowsprits and boomkins however, not everyone sees it that way. Many times LOA is used when in fact what is meant is LOD.

My 31 is 31 LOD. She's more like 38 when you add in bow sprit and mizzen boom overhang, which makes discussing slip rental with the harbor master morally challenging.

It's unlikely the surveyor measured anything. My guess is he just goofed.
