From another websites, this guy was recommended for obsolete SL parts and apparently .. manuals. Said to be helpfull.. Though your particular model isn't listed on his website , seems worth a shot. There is contact info on his web site http://www.slspares.co.uk Sounds like you may just need to cut a new case gasket?

Thanks, Chris, I'll check it out.
And I think your diagnosis is correct.

When I had to rebuild my SL 510 a few years ago, I had the same problems locating help, until I ran into this lead: •: Florida Rigging & Hydraulics 800-718-1649. Service: Brook (call him early), Parts- Tim

They were very familiar with the windlass and helped a great deal, as well as supplying all the needed parts.

Thanks, Eric, but I've decided replacement of the windlass is the better option. My SL windlass is 40 years old and who knows what part will go next.
I'm thinking probably to go with a Lofrans Tigres windlass. Same style as the SL and it should have plenty of power to get the job done.
