Looking at the specs and drawings of the Fuji, it seems they better utilized the interior structure of the boat (strictly my opinion) with the main mast located on top of, and thus supported by, the massive post to which the two head doors attach - thus likely transmitting the compression load to the keel. The mizzen seems to have been placed proportionately more aft and located in the cockpit tub rather than on the bridge deck as with the Mariner 31 and 32.

Not sure if the mizzen location on the Fuji offers any real benefit, but I do believe the location of our main to be awkward and a design weak point on the Mariner. It is almost like the (original) interior design was to offer the main a compression post, which then was ignored (or departed from) by the people involved with performance - possibly to have the boat perform better...

All this said, I wonder if the Fuji handles differently - with all the hubbub about how the Mariner "self steers" and "tracks" - does the Fuji with the more aftward placed rig exhibit more weatherhelm perhaps? Would that be why the Mariner folks ignored the available compression post?

I imagine the two oats sail virtually the same. I seem to remember reading somewhere that they used the same molds. I imagine though that there was some modification in the bow because the clipper bow on the Fuji is molded as part of the hull whereas pictures I've seen of the mariners have another piece that is glassed on to make it a clipper. The Fuji locks in nicely on most points of sail as well when it's balanced. As far as weather helm is concerned, the worm drive removes the skipper from it. I've always been able to trim/reef so that the boat was happy so I'm sure there was little if any weather helm. These are great boats and I look forward to the opportunity to see them side-by-side. We plan on launching the first weekend in June and will cruise weekends for the rest of the month. Starting in July we'll move onboard and stay there until mid-August cruising from Mass to Maine. Hopefully the rendezvous location will be somewhere in that realm.

Is the mast step mounted on top of the door post in the V-berth, thus removing the need for a structural beam for support?

The mast sits on the deck above a teak post. Follow the link to see a picture. The post I'm referring too is the one that is forward and has the head door hinges attached to it.

As mentioned before, it would be very interesting to have them rafted up side-by-side. I've heard that the Fuji's mast was in the same place whether it was the cutter or the ketch. I don't know if that's the case, but it would seem rather strange to me. I'll check the other forum where I think I read it and post later.

It appears as though the Fuji 32 Ketch had the mast in the same position as the sloop. From a construction standpoint, I imagine it would have been easier to do it that way and then just beef up the cockpit sole of the ketch to handle the mizzen mast compression. To compensate, I think the mizzen mast of the fuji is farther aft. I wonder if the distance between the two masts is the same as those on the mariner and what effect it might have on the sailing performance if the rig is more aft. it looks like we ned to do a little comparison sailing to find out ;)
