Subject: Toe Rail Woes: M31

Am doing some calk and varnish work in preparation for winter rains.

While working on the port side, I noticed some give in the toe rail. When I applied lateral pressure, small cracks in the calk appeared. The area of issue was a foot or two on either side of the interior fiberglass knee. This also happens to be roughly the location of the jib sheet block when the jib is reefed; so pressures here are not small.

After pulling off the interior hull slats, I discovered that Murre has no toe rail fastener for about a foot and a half ***on either side*** of the knee. The knee location is roughly where the “next” fastener would be.

Now, in Murre’s defense, I have been reefed plenty in the last number of years, and the rail has not come flying off. Still, it should not flex...at all!

I tightened the existing fasteners a turn or two, and this made a difference (note to self: install lock washers), but I think the ultimate remedy will be to drive some of the ***sail track*** fasteners down through the hull flange and nut them off there—an idea I’d already been toying with for offshore peace of mind.
