Randal,
If you have a bible (West Marine catalogue) in the electrical section there is a West Advisor that tells you exactly how to change from an Off/1/2/both switch to using three on/off switches. It also adds a battery combiner to the set up that allows for charging of both batteries with out overcharging the start battery (depending on your battery bank set up). I have a large house bank of 6volt batteries and one start batery. Read through that information, I have set up Hexli that way and am thrilled with the results.

Yeah, I sure miss Iki. I've been gone for over three months now.

The off/on/both switches will fail just as yours has done. I have had this happen many times over the years.

I wired mine like the West Marine schematic, but I didn't use the combiner. The voltage regulator did a good job of preventing overcharging.

The one protection not there is the alternator field disconnect, so I had to be sure and not kill both batt switches.
