Subject: Rejuvinating mast question

I'm in the process of scarfing in about 6' of the lover part of my mast. It was rotted when we bought her and had been hidden with filler (AND TISSUE PAPER!!!!)

My question is regarding the halyard shives. Has anyone changed out the skinny wire halyard shives for rope ones?

Having the mast down is obviously the time to do this. I don't see enough meat in the head of the mast to accomodate wider shives.

Anybody know?
