Suzie, would be curious to hear how building the new mast goes. I'd assume that, given the dimensions at the foot of the mast (from the pedestal you probably have) and the height, a carpenter could figure the tapering. (But what do I know?)

If/when you get it, could you send for posting any more mast specs you glean? The question of mast specs seems to come up quite a bit.

Will post any new info I get. I'm trying to get wood here in Grenada, at the moment the choices are pitch pine(probably too heavy) or cedar. What d'you think?

I only wish I could answer questions like that. Sorry, I don't know enough about woods.

Is cedar flexible enough? It's always empressed me as being rather brittle.

Seems to me if your choices are limited, weight should not be the primary consideration. Remember, Moitessier built his masts for Joshua out of telephone poles. That something is not ideal speaks nothing of its adequacy.

What about snagging some aluminium pipe and building them up with that? If anything, that would seem the simpler option, and it would answer to both strength and lightness.
