Subject: Dismasted - Change Out Those Old Spreaders!

After several close up visual inspections of the main and mizzen spreaders, both by myself and by my rigger, I have discovered that there was some soft areas of wood on the interior of the spreader that was not visible on the exterior. This was not apparent even after removing the spreaders and poking around with an ice pick. We dismasted this weekend when one of the spreaders failed. I highly recommend that all Mariner owners who have not done so recently change out the old spreaders with new stock - or this could happen to you! http://www.flickr.com/photos/12851392@N07/sets/72157604666626396/

So glad you posted this info on spreader change. I'll be changeing my old spreaders after seeing your wreak. I have Smith System epoxied my old spreaders, but have always had an bad feel about it. Your pictures make me shake looking at them. Did you replace your spreaders with sitka spruce? Sure sorry this happened to you. It looks like it could have been worse, althought it's going to cost a pretty penny.

Hi Kathy,
Thanks for the message. I am a hugh proponent of Smith Systems, and have been to the factory and had many long conversations with Steve Smith (mad scientist). You can bet that the new spreaders will be super penetrated any place Fastener holes will be drilled. Also a penetrating sealer coat for the paint to adhere.

Thanks for sharing. What a catastrophe, but glad no one was hurt.

For some reason you were too modest to mention that it was gusting 60 the day you were out. Even in the shed where I was working on Murre it was blowing a gale. Given your location in the bay at time of failure, I wouldn't be surprised if it were gusting more. Holy Crap!

Do you have any photos of the offending spreader?

I'm also glad to hear that no one was hurt - judging by the chop in the water it must've been blowing hard. Perhaps you may look into aluminum masts as replacements? I bought my Mariner with them installed (ISOMAT) and they are virtually maintenance free. Both are from a Newport 28. Just a thought...

Our M31 expierenced a demasting a few years ago. I thought I was on top of the maintainence but water got in at the head and dripped down to the solid spreader portion and softened from the inside out. That made it undetectable until one beautiful day, not as windy as your's, they all came down. We went with Selden Masts, white powder coated and love them. I didn't think I'd like the boat without the beauty of wooded spars, but quickly changed my mind. Good Luck.
