Another technique to consider is running the mooring line through a block (or blocks if you're doubling back) at the end of the bow sprit.

I run my anchor snubbing line this way on Murre with great success. Oddly, I find it has the same dampening effect that Lawrence mentions for his method and also helps to prevent wandering about the anchorage.

Thanks for all the suggestions, we have had some pretty high winds and the stay seems to hold up well. However, I will look into the other possible solution as well.

Lawerence, good luck with the new spars, aluminum will certainly be far easier to work with. Would love to see pics once they are stepped.
