Subject: Running backstays

I've been researching the use of Mizzen Mules and also Mizzen Staysails and have come up on the question of running backstays. My boat is not equipped with them but in looking at pictures of other Mariners they seem to be there and I would think they're necessary to fly the two sails mentioned above. So, how many people have them? What have others found in regard too when they are used?
