When my wife and I found our 1968 Mariner 40 last year, we had similar questions. I couldn't find any information in any old sailing magazines and a similar posting by me on the Mariner site went unaswered. So here it goes... The Mariner has beautiful lines and a very traditional below deck area. It's not a speed deamon but will get you places at a decent clip. It's a heavy boat and responds like one. The advantage is that it's very stable and forgiving in heavy seas. The ketch design makes for a comfortable sail in heavy winds by sailing with the headsail and mizzen sail alone. The Mariner's Achilles' heel is its deck. Unless your boat was meticulously maintained, you can almost be sure that the deck is partially or completely rotted. I assume you'll get a decent marine surveyor before making the purchase. Our boat is the midst of a total refit (new transom, stem, deck, plumbing, wiring, electronics, etc.). We'll probably post before and after pictures once we're done. Our boat was valued at about $40K which was probably too much given how much work we needed to put into it. True love doesn't come cheap. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info Peter.
I'll have the surveyor focus on the deck.
I can't wait to buy this boat, get it in the water and start spending money on it.
Good luck with your refit.
