Subject: Odd Metal Piece on M-32

I hired a professional rigger to do a rigging servey on Invictus. He fell onto the cabin top breaking the plywood rather badly. (He is sore but not broken!!) Upon removing the remaining plywood we found a silver dollar sized metal disc with a shaft that goes into the frame of the door jam on the head.

What is this?

Does it go under or through the cabin top?

They are about ready to install the new plywood so I need to know as soon as possible.

Thanks,

Manfred Klemme (Invictus M-32 #60)

The shaft is a support rod. You should also have one near the companionway. These rods are threaded and terminated below the cockpit sole with a nut and washer setup.

When I replaced the plywood, I did not adequately seat [countersink] the disc so it protrudes slightly. I sealed it with poly sealer and no problems. The one near the companionway goes through the spindled wood at the end of the half bulkhead near the center line. This is a good idea, since it makes that turned piece very strong so it can be used as a grab handle. When I slide the companionway hatch, it does rub on the disc. Recommend counter sinking, then glassing over.
