Subject: Lengthening the Bow Sprit

I’ve been wondering what the effects of increasing bow sprit length on our boats would be. Either it’s been a lighter wind year than normal, or I’m sailing in the wind shadows more, OR THE BUM REALLY NEEDS A GOOD SCRAPE. (That’s most likely it.) But in any case, I feel this year I’ve had more days where I wish I had more sail that was easier to deploy than, say, a mizzen staysail.

I also notice that when close hauled, the mizzen can add a significant amount of weather helm. Even when the wind is light enough that I could use the sail power, the weather helm can cancel out the gain in push. Does this suggest that the CE is too far aft when close hauled?

So, I like to wonder what adding a foot of bow sprit (and increasing the size of the genoa accordingly) would do to the balance.

Any thoughts.

The immediate effect of lengthening your bowsprit will be an increase in slip fees!
