Subject: Cockpit Comfort: M31 vs. M32

I'm close to acquiring an M32 but having sailed an M31, when younger, thought it more comfortable with coamings. Still, I've never experienced the high taffrail M32 cockpit. Which do you prefer and why?

I have the M31 w/cockpit coamings and like them as they provide back support and a tiny bit of a wind break. They also hold A LOT more water if you're pooped which makes me a tad nerveous on rougher days. I think it's a toss up and has more to do w/what you get used to. I sail w/a friend who has a Catalina. When stearing my boat from atop the worm gear box (my favorite position), he gets freaked out because he's so exposed. I LOVE it because you can see everything. Seems a matter of preference.

During a long passage through gales, I was amazed at how dry the cockpit stayed. The few times she did get pooped, the standard two drains worked real well. I believe the overall design of the boat lends itself to this.

The coamings are great as back rests, and with cockpit cushions become downright comfortable.

We have an M32 ("Promise" #48). We use small vinyl covered beanbag chairs (blue - $17 at Target) in the cockpit. They are really comfortable - conform to whatever shape you want - and you can even use one on top of the steering box. They are great down below too. However, they do take up a little space.
There is some company making them for sailboats - covered with sunbrella I think - but way more expensive.
On another note - I am a little worried about the lack of life lines above the taffrail on the M32, but I see some folks have installed them above the taffrail. I plan to install jacklines on both sides of the deck to tether my automatically inflatable vest to. (I like the looks of the taffrail by itself)

For comfort and back support while siting at the wheel I installed a captains chair from a bar stool, cut the legs off and secured it to a swivel from a ships store and onto the steering box. You can still open the box to get at the switches.

Good Luck
