Subject: M-31 External Chainplates?

Has anyone had thoughts/experience with regard to going to external chainplates on the M-31?
Thanks...

I've thought about it. I can see no reason why it wouldn't work, however installing the backing plates will involve as much work as sticking with the original inboard configuration.

But I like the idea: It makes more space on the decks, and once installed would be easier to inspect. But in my opnion, they are ugly.

I have a 32' where I built external chain plates for the main mast. I hope to some day do the same for the mizzen mast. I didn't want the origional holes in the deck as vibration and movement caused water seepage and deck rot. Why it wasn't done when first build I don't know. The chain plates were of 1/4" stainless steel with backing plates to spread the load.

Good luck

George

Thanks George,

Can you give me more info on the backing plates, i.e., did you go larger than the chain plates?
