I was tempted, Speedy, when I read your glowing "...non-working on boat sailing post", to respond with a terse "Thanks alot!". I may be the only one out here who is up to his armpits in spring projects so that, maybe, I will get some sailing in before the snow flies. Then, to read of someone (you) doing exactly what I'd rather be doing...well, I confess some envy.

It looks like the Lord of Karma (Murphy?) may have evened things out, just a little. Just kidding...but, not about the envy. Keep on havin' those great sails, and keep us informed...it is nice to have something to shoot for (and dream about).

By the way, did you "wax" the Fuji?

Bob, I spent every spare minute for a period of over two years working on Cherub. Moreover, my [then] fiance spent all day every day for two years working on her. Since the boat is a ten-minute walk from home, this was easier.

So I can feel your pain. I wasn't rubbing anything in for sure, just letting folks know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. :)

I have waxed the Fuji on three different occasions now. He's got newer sails, and a much larger genoa, but I believe this is his downfall. If he sailed worth a damn, it would be a closer race. As it is, I have passed him to leeward, pointed up accross his bow, tacked towards him, and jybed of his stern only to catch him again. He probably doesn't like me.

I also did well against a Bristol 32. He pointed a bit higher and faster than I, but on any other point of sail, I was able to walk away from him as well as the J-24 who was trying to catch us.

Keep them light, and keep the sails trimmed on the loose side, and they move along alright. Well, I talk to my boat when she needs some coaxing along.

Clearly, Speedy, you have "paid your dues". You have my respect and regard...well done, sir. You have earned your just deserts...sail on...

As to your lady (former fiance) working on Cherub every day for two years, how remarkable! Does she have an unmarried sister?

Finally, I'd appreciate your input as to the usefulness of the mizzen staysail, in your bouts with the locals, and what is the overlap of the genoa you're flying?

Yes sir, she does have a single sister in Singapore and she is a very nice lady with a very nice personality.

I "think" my jib is about 100 percent of the foretriangle area. I'm not much on design and "sailesse" but that is pretty close.

I use the mizzen on almost every point of sail to good advantage. I am not rigged to oversheet it for a higher angle, but "dragging" it seems to have no ill effects. At any of the reach angles, the mizzen makes a HUGE difference. Not only in trimming for steering, but in speed. Off the wind, I either center it, or drop it.

I have yet to race anyone with my mizzen stay sail, but that day is coming. I have sailed more with my jib and mizzen than in any other configuration. I am not saying Mariner 31/32's are "fast" but I will say Cherub's speed has surprised me and other sailors as well. What makes it special I think is the relative ease of sailing the boat near it's maximum potential. Keep them light! :)

Mug Race Results - 225 entered including 3 Mariners & One Fuji 32

RESULTS : No Mariners finished the race, the lone FUJI 32 finished and received a trophy !!!!!!! May be next year!

Who waxed who ??

Only because you didn't have the mighty Cherub with Speedy at the helm!

The Fuji around here has a big, new genoa. I think that's his problem actualy. Terrible trim, but I'll never tell him.
