Subject: Thanks. Got a line on a tank.

Thanks for the recommendation, but I didn't get your email.

I ordered a tank this morning from a guy who does tanks for two yards here in SF.

How's your project coming?

I complained to Joanna last night that I'm getting tired of spending every weekend in a smelly old boat yard. She suggested the issue is less the boat yard and more my smelly old work clothes, which I’ve worn every weekend since the first if January with out ever passing them through the inside of a washing machine.

“You’ve thrown away dirty rags since January, haven’t you?,” she said, “so why not those old jeans? They certainly look like rags that need tossing.”

In truth they’re now nothing but congealed glue, grease, and paint, with an over-layer of spilled coffee and burrito drippings. Watered by the occasional winter rain—as happens when you spend your winter weekends working in a boat yard—the result can be rank.

I responded that besides the affection one develops for old work clothes, there is a practical advantage. When I wear them to the local lumber yard, I get the contractor’s discount. Joanna wasn’t impressed.
