Thanks, Mike, she's been lovingly maintained all these years. I'm in the process now of upgrading her entire electrical system, all new wiring, batteries (golf cart), "smart" charger, new electronics, etc. Turned 12 mahogany belaying pins on my lathe this winter. Probably getting a new set of sails this spring. My wife says every time she looks out on the front porch, there's another box with new stuff for the boat. Ta' Ata Ori is still floating above her lines though, so I there's room for more!

It helps, of course to have her in fresh water, but I can tell she's yearning for the opean sea -- maybe one of these days...

Good luck with your project.

Lawrence,

What size batteries are you putting in?, I am putting in 4 6 Volt Trojan T-145s, that will give me 520 ah for the house bank, and one 12 Volt starter battery. I am also just begining the wiring process. But the big task at present is to drop in the new engine. I am hoping the weather will cooperate and we can get it in by the end of this month.

Might I also ask what size prop you are turning? You can send a bill for all of the questions I will probably be asking!

Good morning, Mike --

You must be an early riser, sending e-mails before 6 am.

The new batteries for Ta' Ata Ori are much the same as you are putting in. I am installing 4 Interstate 6-V golf cart batteries, with a combined capacity of around 500 or so amp hours. I don't have the exact specs here with me. Plus I'll have a Group 29 Interstate starting battery. The new charger is a Charles Marine multi-stage, 30-amp unit. I'm really jazzed about my new VHF, too. It's a Uniden with a fully-functional (wireless) remote that I can use in the cockpit (or up the mast, for that matter) to control the main radio. Works like a charm. Certainly better than the 1970s vintage VHF I just took out.

Good luck installing your new "Westerbreak" engine. Should be quite a project. I'm planning on sticking with my vintage Perkins 4-107, re-built about 12 years ago, but low engine hours since then and all fresh water. It gets the job done.

On the prop, I'll have to check my records. That's not a number I carry around in my head. It is a three-blade, non-folding prop, though. My previous boat, an Ericson 35, had a MaxProp. I loved it. Particularly in reverse. Speaking of which -- you probably already know this -- when you do get the engine installed, don't expect your M40 to turn on a dime when you back out of your slip. When you do it the first time, you should have helpers on the dock who have been sworn to secrecy, so the word of your frantic maneuverings won't get around the marina. How do I know that? I ain't sayin'.

[> [> [> [> [> M-40 in Reverse....LOL -- John & Jan, - Friday - 03/10/06 - 2:51pm

Mike & Lawrence, we've been lurking on your thread but your warning about backing the M-40 reminded Jan about last fall...

We left Santa Teresa on the mooring ball in San Diego Bay for two months while we were traveling across the states on a video assignment. When we got back, it was time to swing into the municipal docks on Shelter Island for a couple of weeks of unlimited water and electricity. (We're still sanding! Does it never end?)

At the end of our stay it was time to head home to the mooring so our friends shoved us off and I started backing out but no luck. I could rev the old Perkins as high as she would go and we just made foam. No headway. Fortunately the slip I drifted into (or skillfully sailed into under bare poles?) was vacant.

What was the problem? Check the transmission. Everything was good. Finally after consuming a couple of favorite beverages I decided to dive in and take a look.... YIKES! It looked like Seaworld growing on the prop. It seems my bottom cleaner took that literally. Just the bottom -- not the prop and not the keel!

Fortified by more beverages and scrapers I did the job myself. I was assisted by thousands of hungry fish who enjoyed the snacks I delivered in the process and, as a bonus, Santa Teresa's mileage has greatly improved ...

Another "Duh!" Sailing Moment.

Yes, we all have those moments of revelation. Prior to owning Ta' Ata Ori, I owned a Ranger 20, a J/24 a J/29 and an Ericson 35 (not all at one time). All of these boats would turn in their own length, so I got used to spinning the wheel and spinning the vessel. My first "full-keel adventure" came the first time I backed the M40 out of her slip. Ta' Ata Ori showed me who was boss. No amount of turning the wheel made much difference, as she sedately backed in more-or-less a straight line toward the shiny yachts parked on the other side of the marina. Many interested observers were on hand to watch the drama and shout contradictory advice, since Ta' Ata Ori hadn't left her slip for 3 years before I bought her. All ended well, with no dings or dents, except in my self-esteem and my hard-fought reputation for being a savy sailor. I think I've got it figured out now, although I'd still rather nobody watched.

Thanks for your story. I also visited your web site. Good stuff. Best wishes for a delightful odyssey with Santa Teresa. Pax Vobiscum.
