Subject: Mast paint and prep question

Am painting the main mast.

I'd like to take it down to bare wood, cover w/penetrating epoxy (i use smith's), and then paint up w/a two part poly (no primer).

I followed this method on SOME of my varnish work (Cetol) and it seems to be holding up just as well as the non epoxied stuff. I'm hoping in the end it will hold up much better, but it's only been a year.

Does penetrating epoxy work as a primer w/two part paints?

Has anyone tried this?

RR

Randall,
My knowledge is this. If you go to bare wood and then cover with epoxy or penetrating epoxy, my Interlux rep ( I am a Wet Marine Assistant manager) told me to let it cure for about a week to let the amine blush rise to the surface. then wash with soap and water. Let dry. Then lightly sand (so to create a mechanical bond with the paint.) Wash again with soap and water and let dry. Wipe with whatever thinner your paint tells you to use and then apply paint.
I have used this process for the cabin and deck as I have rebuilt it and used it on the masts before I varnished them with Perfection varnish. Thus far I love the results!
Hope it helps. Let me know if I can help.

Al
