Subject: Take the "Hard Aground" Challenge

I'll challenge anyone to a "hard grounding" contest. The following pics are from Gypsy Mariner's 27+ years of good service:

1984 Off, or is it "on"? Atlantic City, New Jersey

2005 Biloxi, Mississippi - deposited by Katrina storm surge

These are the "hardest", but by no means the only groundings Gypsy Mariner has had! With extensive blue water and green grass experience, she qualifies as amphibious.

I will take particular pride that I have no comparable photos (or events) in my sailing career :-) However, my sailing career is pretty short so I'm sure I will acquire my fair share.

Is there a depth sounder onboard either boat? I have found while boating a depth sounder is much more accurate than a leaded rope!!

Yes, there is a depth sounder on the Gypsy Mariner, but Hurricane Katrina took boats to places where none had gone before. As to the grounding off the Altlantic City coast in the 1980s, I think the official report was that the captain was below sleeping and the crew, after being driven for a few days in wet weather and heavy seas, got attracted to the bright lights of Atlantic City and the dreams of free rum and warmth like ... well, like moths to a flame! BTW, these photos from the 1980's grounding were reportedly used by BoatUS for many years in their ads.

Depth sounders are good to CONFIRM groundings!

I wish I could find one the would show the real depth in real time. Most of them lag by at least one full boat length while moving at a minimum speed....

Yes, I was monitoring the depth sounder, mainly to find how far off it was. Did I mention both groundings were while anchored with an outgoing tide? It turns out we don't find the bottom unless the depth sounder reads 15". Now I know what to expect. :-)

My feeling about it is, 'If you don't run your boat aground once a season, your not using it enough'. Having said that, I think you've taken it to an extreme!
