Subject: Alternators

Ok, I need heelp here, I've been chasing down electrical charging problems on my M-40. I discovered that the alternator never really ever 'charged' my batteries, so I had it rebuit. Now it checks out fine on a bench test. But it still doesnt put out 12v on the boat??? (yes, it's hooked up correctly!) I'm suspecting that my operating rpm's (about 10-12k max) aren't high enough to take it to output voltage. So, therefore it must be wrong alternator for the Perkins.... So, does anyone have recommendations for a replacement alternator? I can't really identify the alternator other than "Delco-Remy"... Any thoughts on the charging system? Thanks! Gordon

Hello Gordon
Got your email. Congrads from Chris and myself. Check your wire to ensure strands are not broken. If wire is ok and you want to increase amps, go to an auto parts store with your old alt and exchange it for a high output delco one wire alternator. I'm replacing mine with a 100 amp alt.

Yes!!! That was it! The Delco is a two wire both wires were hooked up - and it's always been wired that way. The #1 wire stopped the alternator from providing charge. Disgarding that, made it work! - Thanks for the advice - how your boat coming?
