Subject: Another near-sinking

So there we are chugging along at 6 knots in a 20 knot breeze in Narragansett Bay with the port rail buried when both my bilge pumps fire away and the high bilge pump starts alarm blaring. I went below to find the bilge to be suitable for an aquarium. I got us upright and we all lived happily after.
As far as I can figure out the bilge pumps must have back-syphoned with both through hulls buried under water. A syphone break didn't help. I should have listened to Gordon sooner and installed check valves on the bilge through hulls.
This is something to keep in mind as I suspect all M40's have their bilge pump through hulls installed on the port side.

Yes, that's a problem, isn't it! I had originally written a very long piece describing that situation, but the postings are limited to a certain length. Your bilge pumps were probably always fighting in pressure inrush on the 'through hulls' since the boat was built. It only happends when your 'clipping along', Fairly disconcerting when you lift up the floor boards to check the bilge and you have 5 feet of water - it made my knees weak.... gordon
