Subject: Anchor rode for M31--how thick? how strong?

This may have been lost in a previous string.

How much strength and what size do any of you recommend for anchor rode--in this case, the rope. I am guessing that 9/16 to 3/4 triple strand with a breaking strength of about 12,000 lbs is sufficient, since I would imagine that a sudden jerk, as in the case of a violent wave, would not break the rode/rope (the old owner used 1 and 1/2" triple strand, but it is nearly impossible to stuff into the locker).

Nigel Calder gives the design load for a boat like a 31/32 at about #3000 in 60 knots of wind, about #1500 in 42 knots. For those numbers I would think that 5/8" would be as big as you would need and Calder recommends heavier than just about anyone else, most sources would give 1/2" for our boats. I have 5/8" on my working anchor. Remember if you have too large a rope you lose the stretch that makes you more comfortable at anchor.

My rope rode was on the boat when I purchased it (2003). I tried measuring w/calipers last night and it comes out to be 11/16ths, which I assume really means it's 5/8ths (seems it would thicken and loosen a bit w/age).

It's 3-brade, nylon.

STEVE, where'd you get the Calder data? Nice stuff.

Chapter 9 of his "Cruising Handbook". He has very extensive data regarding anchoring systems, techniques and gear. Good stuff.

Thanks for the good advice--9/16 triple strand it shall be.

I never thought about the stretch factor; that's a nice consideration.

It will be a relief to be rid of that 1 1/2" hawser....

Have a grand 2007
