Robyn,

In the event that you haven't yet started in on this project, you might want to think about laying down a coat of epoxy resin first. West System makes something called "special coatings" epoxy that works well. That is, it receives varnish well--after washing off the waxy surface and lightly sanding it. Many wooden boat shops are now laying on a coat of epoxy on all bare wood before they do any varnishing. In effect, the idea is that the real work of the wood protection is done by the epoxy, and the varnish serves as UV protection for the epoxy. Epoxy is not always easy to work with, especially as the outside temperature heats up. But applied correctly, your masts will last much longer!

Thanks for your response, Josh. We are just finishing up the sanding, and have not put a finish on yet. Epoxy sounds like a good idea... is this similar to something called Bristol finish, or a urethane type of thing? It seems there are a number of options; when all is said and done, weather protection is what we are after and your suggestion sounds good.

Robyn, I used about 8 coats of Interlux Flagship Varnish on Meloura's spruce masts, and this is the 4th summer of a good finish, with nothing more than touch up of any nicks.
