Subject: New sails on M32

Do any of you M31 & M32 folks have any thoughts about using a larger roach on the mizzen and main? My rigger thinks it will help balance the boat and is wondering if anyone has tried it.

Eric

Eric,

Murre came to me w/a fully battened main and mizzen. The main has considerable extened roach. I couldn't tell you how much, but it's enough to touch the backstay on each tack along about three feet of leach (not a bad thing--there's very little friction here and I've not noticed any excessive wear on the leach). I'm very happy w/this sail configuration, but less for the sake of balance as just more effin sail area. Not sure why the previous owner chose to extend the roach on the main but not the mizzen. Seems it would be appropriate for both and for the same reasons. Your sails will need to have full battens and there's a maintenance/wear component here. But again, I've not noticed excessive wear and none of the battens have broken in my three years of ownership. In fact, the battens keep the sail from luffing AT ALL, and so reduce wear on the leach, at least.

Personal opinion is that it's a great idea.

Who is your rigger? I could use some rigging advice along different lines...

Good luck,

RR

The rigger is Jason Winkel, his business is called Argo Rigging, and is located in Sausalito by Arques School near West Marine. His # is 415-302-4253. Highest recommendation!
