In my experience w/my Perkins (emphasis there), I get some blackish smoke when I throw the engine into a hard acceleration, like the back and fill needed to get me out of the slip and into the channel before I drift into that spotless Bristol Channel cutter downwind of me.

The reasons are obvious, the engine is usually not warmed up thoroughly (I’m impatient to get going) and it simply can’t combust all the fuel being pumped into the chamber by my dragster-style, back and fill acceleration.

In my case this seems normal (your car will do the same if you floor it) because the smoking goes away under normal RPMs, especially when the engine is up to temperature. The key is normal operations--as with cigarettes, continuous smoking could be bad news.

The below web site has a good essay on that and other smoke diagnosis:

Get it checked by a pro if you are concerned. Now’s the time, man.
