I have to wonder this because my understanding is that the force of the crash threw Eddie upward into the car roof, causing the head injuries that killed him. If he had been wearing a seat belt, that would not have happened. Nowadays, at least in the USA, there is such a public safety consciousness (enforced by law) about wearing seatbelts in a moving automobile that it is hard to imagine there was ever a time when seat belts weren't standard equipment in cars, let alone such consciousness about needing to wear one.
