Chase, Frank is correct - seatbelts in cars were largely unheard of in the UK at this time (except maybe at the very top end of the market - I wouldn't know). They must have started to come in shortly afterwards because I can remember having them in my 1960s Ford Cortina but wearing them wasn't compulsory. According to Wikipedia, wearing of front seat belts didn't become compulsory here until 1983 although I think fitting them to new cars was compulsory much earlier. (The Wikipedia article is tagged so this information may not be reliable).
When you launched your thread a while ago to ask which decade we preferred (music apart) 1950s or current, I could have written a whole essay in reply contrasting how some things had improved dramatically for the good of everyone while others had declined abysmally. Road safety is certainly a big improver and as you say, it now seems inconceivable that we allowed people to drive unprotected like that. Helmets for motor cyclists would come into the same category.
