From what I understand, Eddie went through the windscreen of the taxi, as he was sat in the middle of Gene Vincent and Sharon Sheeley, his girlfriend.
The car, a Ford Consul taxi, was driven by a George Martin, and it is said that there was confetti still in the car, evidence of it's use for a wedding in the afternoon.
As they were driving along the A4 to London, at Chippenham, they went through a set of lights which were on green, building up more and more speed, so much so,it alarmed the passengers. (Sheeley recalled in 80's interview). As it reached the bend at Rowley Hill, Chippenham, either a tyre blew, or the driver over corrected the wheel, causing a skid. The back end slid round and collided with a lamp post. Sheeley came round in a field,at the side of the road, with Vincent comforting her. She asked about Eddie and Gene told her "He's ok, shaken up, but having a cigarette sat in the back of the car". She knew he was lying. "He'd have been with me, if he could have", she reminisced in a 1980's interview. Apparently, as they were loaded into ambulances, their hands were linked together, as they could tell that they, Cochran and Sheeley were in love. Sheeley fought to stay away, but lost consciouaness and she says she never saw Eddie again. "He lived 8 hours and died the next day", she recalled.
At the hospital, Gene Vincent said to the specialist, attending to Eddie, "If you can save Eddie, I'll give you $10,000". To which the doctor replied "You could give me $10,000,000 dollars....theres nothing more I can do".
Eddie had suffered serious brain injury.
At the scene of the crash, locals rushed out of their homes to help. A young Policeman on the scene was David Dee(?) He was a budding guitar player, and found the encased Gretsch of Eddie's in the road, surrounded by sheet music, etc. He played on it at the station for a few weeks before returning it to Mrs Alice Cochran, Eddie's mom. He went on to play in the group 'Dave Dee, Dozy, Mick & Titch'.
Martin, the driver, got a 6 month Jail sentance for death by dangerous driving, I think. It is often said that he was later targetted for attack by teddy boys. I'm not sure how true that is.
Eddie Cochran was gone at 21. A year after Buddy, it was the final nail in the coffin for original rock and roll. What a rocker he was, what a guitarist, what a performer, and what a great looking guy he was. Really handsome. Who knows how far he'd have gone?
Legend.
