Hi, Donnie and everyone- I noticed the cap being off, too, but didn't mention it as I personally think, and this is only my opinion, that Buddy had access to another one. I wonder if playing live, Buddy Holly switched pickups very much. Too bad Niki isn't around for us to ask about this. He had very vivid memories about the guitars and amps.
I feel that if you want something like Buddy's guitar, get a 2 tone sunburst reissue, as the real ones are out of most of our reach, and play the living heck out of it! Break the pickup cover yourself wailing out "Starlight" and "Peggy Sue" in bar bands every chance you get. Watch the selector cap sail off onto the dance floor, never to be seen again. You will wear through the finish on the maple neck in a couple years. I have one of the first reissues, and have played his songs on it every chance I get, and mine is "reliced" pretty hard. Make your own. Any 50's sunburst strat with a maple neck is a Buddy Holly strat. Thanks-
