 Brett, I don't think Buddy messed with the pickups too much. All the live versions I've heard of Peggy Sue I've heard do not have him altering pickups. Also, much like his singles he always seemed to play with the middle pickup selection.

I'm not sure exactly what you meant by having access to another guitar. If you mean because some photos feature a cap on the selector, he did have his original strat with the missing cap stolen. The future couple strats that he had, still had the cap. Maybe that would explain it.
