This question isn't as simplistic as it might first appear. You have to consider the criteria. Are we just looking for four giants of 1950s rock n roll, or the four we like most, or the four most influential etc etc? Or should be looking at figures that most closely parallel the presidents whose craggy faces adorn Mt Rushmore? Let's try the last one.
On the mountain we have two founding fathers, an assassinated civil war leader and a man who did a lot of different things but whose best-known achievement seems to have been the Nobel Peace Prize. They span three centuries so I don't think we need to confine ourselves to the 50s.
The first two are easy: Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry. Third also: John Lennon (his estrangement from the band and former fans almost qualifies as a civil war). Fourth is more difficult as there isn't a Nobel Prize for music. The nearest equivalent seems to be the Polar Music Prize of 1 million kroner awarded since 1992 by the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. The 2000 winner: Bob Dylan for “four decades of constantly changing creativity.” He’ll do.
