Such a interesting and potentially controversial question.

As to the actual foundation of Rock and Roll, you would have to look at Big Joe Turner, Louis Jordan, Wynonie Harris and Roy Brown. yes, I realize there are many other candidates, but these 4 were very potent catalysts.

For the stars who really popularized and created the classic form, I would nominate Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Elvis, and.... Alan Freed.
