Hi everyone,
Thanks for the great replies to my post. All of you make excellent points and I certainly agree with you Chris as far as finding the internet/e-bay quite invaluable to tracking down certain items (in your case photographs, in mine people who are in some way connected to GAC's Winter Dance Party).
Frank, you are quite correct with your post about the ever dwindling "mom and pop" record shops. In Pittsburgh, PA where I am, we have two wonderful examples of the old style record shops of yesterday: Jerry's Records and The Attic. Both are local shops that cater to the true music aficionado. Sadly, for every Jerry's Records, you could point to thousands of Best Buy's, Circuit City's or online "shops". What it seems like we are in danger of losing isn't so much just a record shop as it is a way of life. With these big conglomerate monsters, a sense of anonymity seems to be the rule in regards to the business owner and the customer.
I've always felt one of the chief joys of collecting is the finding of some of these treasures, a high or a thrill I don't often get from e-bay. An example of this would be when I wandered into a small little antique shop in Texas and happened on a nice little run of an old Charlton magazine from the late fifties called "Country Music Roundup". Not only were these in nice condition and relatively cheap, but the sensation of digging through scores of old periodicals to unearth these gems was a feeling I'll not soon forget.
Thank you for the compliment regarding my book, Randy. Coming from you that means quite a bit, although I'm always hesitant of putting myself in the company of such Holly researchers as John Beecher, Bill Griggs, Roddy Jordan, Kevin Terry, ect. These guys are my heroes and certainly an inspiration for the work I'm currently doing on my book.
