I didnt know what to expect when I headed up to Liverpool for the "Liverpool Tribute To Buddy Holly" and was a bit worried when I bought the very well produced programme with the repro of the 1958 British tour programme. The Merseyside Police Band, a boy band, a string quartet, the West Kirby Light Operatic Society etc... about 40 different acts playing Buddy's music in different genres and only doing one song each... no song repeated in the whole night? But it worked. It proved that Holly's music can be played in many different ways and still sound good.
It is about time someone put on a British Buddy Holly tribute for the fans we have had nothing since Paul McCartney stopped doing his shows in London. Dave Crosby deserves some sort of reward for the nearly two years of work he put into this venture. He tells me he hopes to make it an annual event in one form or another, maybe a weekender and get Holly fans from around the world to come.
To those who didnt like the night I just say: Stay home and listen to the CDs!
Clive
