Over the course of the last year, it has been my pleasure to talk with many of the fans who saw the Winter Dance Party of 1959. My official excuse to talk to these fine people has been the research and writing of a book on that infamous tour, although unofficially I've been, I think, a fan first, an author second.
As my work on this book has gone along, my original conceptualization changed a smidge and I decided to talk with ANYONE associated with any of the shows, a very good decision, considering some of the stories and information I've been lucky enough to turn up. One of these people that fell into my broadened net was the emcee for the February 01, 1959 Green Bay, Wisconsin show, Bill Walters.
My contact with Bill came primarily through his close friend and care-giver, Elaine. This fine lady had a true love and appreciation for Bill Walters that carried forth in all of the stories and information she passed on to me. I can honestly say that after speaking with Elaine, Bill Walters ceased to become just another name related to Holly's final tour, and became, instead, a flesh and blood man. A researcher's dream come true!
Elaine informed me this evening that Bill Walters passed away quietly last week, dying with the dignity that for so many years he had lived. At the mortuary, in honor of Bill, many of his broadcasts from the 1950's were played in his honor...Rest in peace, Bill. You will be remembered.
