Mike,

The reason is that I am after a sound that is EXACTLY like the record. I have worked with live backing and sometimes it is ok. However, when you get people who aren't exactly brilliant at playing instruments, and their failings start affecting your overall sound, it isn't good at all.
Plus, if I was to start a band up, the way things are going in the uk, it would be very hard to get enough work. Venues are really struggling at the moment to afford to pay for entertainment. People are NOT going out like they did, as, for example, a pint of lager in a pub is maybe £2.50, and you can go to the local supermarket and buy a 4 pack of cans of that lager for £5. People are fed up of being ripped off.
A 5 piece band, for example, costs around £600/$1200 to hire for a night. A solo singer, like myself, is cheaper to hire. I've heard all the arguments about "Keep music live", etc. And that is all fine and well. But the fact is, if I was relying on working only with live musicians, then I really would struggle for work. It's a hard enough game at the moment as it is. I do it for a living, it pays my bills, and I get £200/$400 a night, and above.
The problem with the band scene in the uk is that there are far too many people who have bands and play a really 'heavy' rock style, with almost unaudible lyrics. It's all heavy drumming, and these bands play for free. It is not my cup of tea, at all. I could mess around in a band, for free, and work a hard day or night shift job in a fruit/vegetable warehouse, for the equivalent of what I earn in a night for a weeks pay. And I have to tell you that I'd rather do what I am doing, rather than carrying big bags of potatoes, etc all over the place.

I must be doing something right, as I am in demand and people always say that they really enjoy what I do.
