 Don't be offended HK. My tirade against blacked up minstrelism wasn't aimed at you. You didn't bring it up. It just popped up in your thread, that's all. You can see why it did. I just despise it so, and it gets me all riled up.

The wrong tree that I believe you are barking up is the "blending" of "black" music and "white" music in the 19th century. I don't believe there was much blending of the various forms of American immigrant folk music types in that century, certainly not before the civil war, and in my view, not until the early 20th. I don't really think that there WAS a "white" music, and "black" music forms such as blues and gospel hadn't developed enough to be called distinct genres.

Your original question is not a simple as you made it sound, HK.
