The Beatles were signed to appear on the Ed Sullivan Show in Oct., 1963, before JFK was shot. Time & Newsweek both did articles about them in mid Nov., 1963. The CBS Morning News did a story about them on Nov.22, 1963. I guess I'm trying to say that the Beatles were on their way before JFK was shot! I've heard that Walter Cronkite was looking for a light hearted story to do on the news in Dec., 1963, after all the JFK coverage, & remembered the story about the British group that had run a couple weeks earlier. As to wheter it helped kids "recover" their music, writer Greil Marcus told a story about having almost forgotten how great rock & roll was by early Feb, 1964. He remembered Chuck Berry, but not the guitar solo in "Johnny B. Goode." He went down to the college lounge to watch the Ed Sullivan Show, & he said the place exploded after the Beatles performed. I think a lot of people threw away their "Hootenanny" albums & started to grow their hair long!
